The sun shone on the first weekend of this year's 'Gigs in the Garden' at the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre where Eddi Reader and Jack L came to wow the crowds at purpose-built outdoor 'Piper's Garden' venue.

This summer, the visiting artists playing the Gigs in the Garden had a new stage to play in but Jack L playing the venue on Saturday night would not be bound by the stage, striding through the audience as he sang and even hopping up on the odd table or two to belt out a tune while being careful not to spill anyone's pint.

The ultimate showman gave everyone a night to remember at the Naul venue.

The weekend was kicked off the night before in fine style as Scottish singer, Eddi Reader brought her beautiful voice to the Naul venue with a wonderful repertoire of music woven together with plenty of good humoured banter that made this a perfect summer's evening under the stars from the woman most famous for singing 'it's got to be perfect'.

Nordic folk trio, Dreamer's Circus filled the support slot at the first Gig in the Garden on Friday and came all the way from Sweden and Denmark to play the Naul venue with a modern twist on the traditional music from that part of the world.

Jack L was supported on the Saturday night by the multi-talented, singer, songwriter, musician and producer that is Gavin Glass.

Just before the concerts kicked off, the venue took possession of its new specially designed dome stage for the Gigs in the Garden which is an environmentally friendly grass-covered design that echoes the local landscape and particularly the nearby 'Four Knocks' heritage site.

For those who got a taste of that this unique series of outdoor concerns offer from the first weekend, and for those regretting not going along to see Eddi Reader or Jack L, the good news is that the Gigs in the Garden are set to return next month with two more big names.

August 11 and 12 will see the return of Gigs in the Garden starting on August 11 with Ulaid and Duke Special bring a unique mix of contemporary song-writing and traditional music together for the Naul audience to enjoy. The following night, a real legend of the music business comes to the town in the shape of Donovan, a member of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame who is credited with 'single-handedly initiating the psychedelic revolution'. A friend and influence for The Beatles, this is a gig not to be missed.

Both weekends end, as the latest one did on Sunday with a day for the community with a family barbecue and some great live music.
