Fingal has youngest population in Ireland

A tale of two towns is revealed in the latest Census figures which show that Balbriggan has the youngest population in the country, while Malahide has one of the oldest.

The average age of residents in the North Fingal town comes in at 30.8 years, while Malahide's is 38.6 years of age, the third oldest in the country.

Fingal is the youngest adminstrative county in Ireland with the average age of 34.3, well behind the national average of 37.4. However, the population is ageing in most electoral areas, according to the Census figures

Census 2016 shows the population of the primary school age group (5-12) stood at 548,693, an increase of 8.8 per cent since 2011.

Fingal saw the largest increase in its primary school poulation, rising by 19 per cent (6,273) to 39,349, followed Meath which rose by 14.4 per cent to 27,198 and Laois which saw an increase of 13.6 per cent to 11,591.

Fingal also had one of the largest increases in persons aged 65 and with a 36.1% rise since 2011.

Portmarnock North had an average age of 44.2 years in 2016 compared with 42.5 in 2011, up 4%. Portmarnock South had an average age of 40.4 years in 2016 compared with 39.5 in 2011, up 2.3%.

Malahide West had an average age of 40.5 years compared with 38.5 in 2011, up 5.2%. Malahide East had an average age of 39.0 years compared with 38.5 in 2011, up 1.3%.

Kinsaley had an average age of 32.2 years compared with 31.3 in 2011, up of 2.9%. Garristown had an average age of 35.4 years compared with 34.5 in 2011, up 2.6%.

Ballyboghil had an average age of 37.8 years compared with 37.6 in 2011, up 0.5%.

Balbriggan Rural had an average age of 29.2 years compared with 27.6 in 2011, up 5.8%. Balbriggan Urban had an average age of 35.7 years compared with 34.8 in 2011, up 2.6%.

Balscadden had an average age of 36.9 years compared with 36.2 in 2011, up 1.9%. Hollywood had an average age of 37.4 years compared with 36.3 in 2011, up 3.0%.

Skerries had an average age of 36.4 years compared with 34.3 in 2011, up 6.1%.

Holmpatrick had an average age of 39.7 years, compared with 38.9 in 2011, up 2.1%.

Airport had an average age of 34.9 years compared with 32.8 in 2011, up 6.4%. Swords-Glasmore had an average age of 35.9 years compared with 33.7 in 2011, up 6.5%. Swords-Forrest had an average age of 32.8 years compared with 31.1 in 2011, up 5.5%. Swords-Lissenhall had an average age of 31.3 years compared with 29.9 in 2011, up 4.7%.

Swords Village had an average age of 39.2 years, compared with 37.6 in 2011, up 4.3%.

Kilsallaghan had an average age of 39.9 years compared with 38.4 in 2011, up .9%.

Donabate had an average age of 33.7 years compared with 32.1 in 2011, up 5.0%. Lusk had an average age of 31.9 years, compared with 30.8 in 2011, up 3.6%.

Rush had an average age of 35.0 years compared with 33.5 in 2011, up 4.5%.
