Entrepreneur taking a stand for office workers
AN entrepreneur and physical therapist from Portmarnock says that the days of sitting all day at your desk in work are over and that it is healthier and more productive to stand.
Office workers need to stand more while at their desks to improve their health and reduce the effects of 'excessive sitting', according to Mark O'Brien (33) from Portmarnock, owner of new online store www.fitspluswell.ie.
Mark says that productivity amongst workers will improve by simply standing while working at their desks and that excessive sitting is a 'silent killer'.
Fitpluswell have brought a unique computer desk to the market called the Varidesk, which allows a person to vary between standing and sitting while working.
The Portmarnock businessman said: 'A change is needed in the modern office, and all it takes is enabling employees and employers to be able to work while standing, and the Varidesk is the tool that does just that.'
Mark explained: 'Most of us are sitting for up to 15 hours a day, if not more, and this is a silent killer in our society that needs addressing.
'I'm at the front line and I am seeing a huge rise in the number of people attending my physical therapy clinic, Harbour Clinic in Dun Laoghaire, with posture related complaints that have developed as a result of prolonged sitting."
'Excessive sitting, or sitting disease, is also now known to contribute to the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
'So just getting up off your backside for an extra three to four hours per day while at work and at home can reduce these risks.'
A recent test carried out by a scientific team from the University of Chester in the UK working with BBC Two's 'Trust Me I'm A Doctor' programme, found that standing increased people's heart rate which – when averaged over weeks and months – lead to the equivalent number of calories burned as if they'd run about ten marathons in the year.
'They also found that their blood sugar levels dropped after standing at their desks for random intervals at least three hours daily,' Mark said.
Mark wants to help people fight the effects of 'sitting disease' and has launched a new online store called www.fitpluswell.ie selling a wide variety of innovative rehabilitation and wellness products.
One of his most exciting products is the Varidesk – from €375 – which Mark hopes will change the way people work in offices and homes around the country.
It is available in two sizes, 'Single' and 'Pro'. The Pro version allows users to add two computer monitors. Many standing desks on the market today cost anything from €500 to €3,000.
These standing desks are complicated and require assembly and installation. The Varidesk simply sits on top of your existing desk so when you feel the need to stand simply raise the Varidesk using the convenient handles on either side.
This raises your computer and keyboard to a height that suits you when standing. Simply reverse the process to return to a seated position. The Varidesk is an effective, affordable, easy-to-use standing up desk for both home and the office.
