Drugs charges bring €400 fine

SWORDS man Joseph Barker ( 20), Castlegrange Avenue, Swords was convicted on two drugs charges was fined a total of €400 at Swords District Court last week.

Barker had denied being in possession of cannabis resin and cannabis herb for his own use at his home on February 4. He had argued that the drugs belonged to one or other of two men who were in his bedroom with him at the time Garda David Smith carried out a search under warrant. However, Judge Dermot Dempsey said that he was satisfied with Garda Smith's evidence that the defendant had ownership of the drugs. Gda. Smith had told the court when he entered Mr Barker's room, he saw him trying to discard of a small quantity of cannabis herb underneath his leg. And a box of cannabis resin was in a box on a table beside where the defendant was sitting on his bed.
