Cuts to Balbriggan rail service

Published 25/09/2012 | 14:40

A CASH-strapped Irish Rail is planning to cut services to Balbriggan while at the same time planning to increase fares by 6%.

Reports suggest that soaring fuel costs, an improved road network and competition from better bus services along with falling passenger numbers has hit the company's revenue. A wide-ranging series of cuts to services across the country is to be initiated by the company and it is understood the axe will fall on three services from Connolly Station to Balbriggan. One off-peak service in each direction between Dublin and Balbriggan will also be cancelled, it is understood. The cuts are likely come towards the end of the year and are being put in place despite a recent €36 million cash injection into the company.
