BRAVE unarmed detectives tackled a gang of robbers they believed to be armed in a dramatic conclusion to an attempted robbery at The Village Store ( Costcutters) in Lusk that saw customers and staff locked up while raiders emptied the tills.
A passer-by alerted gardaí when four men were witnessed getting out of a car, some carrying guns and entering The Village Store at around 10.05pm last Saturday night, January 19th. The gang threatened staff and customers with two handguns and forced both staff and customers in the store into a back office and locked them inside while they emptied the tills at the store. A detective Garda car was in the vicinity when the alarm was raised and was on the scene in two minutes as the gang emerged from the store and tried to drive away. The unarmed detectives blocked the robbers path and descended on the get-away car, smashing window and seizing the car keys while blocking the doors and subsequently arresting three of the four men. A fourth robber escaped on foot from the scene and is thought an amount of cash from the robbery that remains to be recovered. Two imitation handguns were seized from the arrested men who ranged in ages from 25 to 49 and were from Kilbarrack, North Strand and Swords and are understood to be all known to the gardaí. The three men were detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act in three separate Garda Stations. At the time of writing, the three men had not been charged and local gardaí in Swords were attempting to track down the fourth gang member who escaped on foot from the crime scene.
