The Big Movie Quiz will take place on Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in The Old Boro pub in Swords and will take the format of 100 movie quiz questions. A raffle and plenty of prizes will be on offer on the night with an entry fee of €10 per person.

The money raised on the night will go towards the restoration and preservation of St Columba's Church, which, sadly last year lost part of its roof when it collapsed.

The church, which is approaching 200 years of continual use and exposure to the elements, is in need of major restoration works costing in the region of €500,000.

A comprehensive survey took place in 2005 and the roof was replaced after the survey revealed very significant decay in the roof timbers. At a cost of €180,000, the money was raised through parish funds set aside for this purpose, plus funding from Fingal County Council, the Urban and Village Renewal Scheme, The National Development Plan and Central Church Funds. A further €60,000 bank loan was also acquired.

However, water damage caused by the poor roof extended below the roof timbers down into the walls themselves resulting in the roof collapsing and the building being closed.

'This is a heavy blow to the parishioners, who've lost their spiritual home, and to the entire local community, who've lost a wonderful facility and inspiring resource,' said Canon Robert Deane.

A consultation with professionals has revealed that the amount needed to save the building far exceeds the capability of the relatively small number of parishioners.

'The church cannot be used again until restoration and repair work is done,' added Canon Deane.

A number of fundraisers are being held to raise the required funds to repair the church with the Big Movie Quiz being one of them. For further information contact Deirdre on 085-1653907.
