BALBRIGGAN COMMUNITY College recently took on a distinctly German feel as it celebrated the national holiday of that country whose ties to Balbriggan continue to get stronger. Balbriggan Community College recently celebrated Germany's national holiday by plastering the school campus with all things German in honour of Balbriggan's twin town, St. Wendel.
Signs reading 'auf Deutsch' were placed around the school and staff and students alike shared what they knew about the country from its history, geography, science, music, art and more. The school's German department team composed a short catchy marching song for the occasion and it was sung with gusto by the students and recorded for posterity.
The school has a German member of staff in the shape of language assistant, Caterina Wagmann who has been made to feel very welcome at the Balbriggan school. She went to school in St. Wendel and is studying to become a second level teacher in Germany. She is teaching in Balbriggan as a result of the strong connection between the two towns. A spokesperson for the school said: ' The Balbriggan Town Council and Fingal County Council have been tremendous in their support of the venture and we thank them sincerely.'
On Monday, October 8, a group of exchange students arrived at the school with their teachers and are being hosted by families in Balbriggan. will they be hosted by our wonderful families in the Balbriggan. They will attend school and enjoy the many activities and sights the area has to offer.
