A SWORDS woman has won a cash windfall for her son after playing for him on the RTE and National Lottery game show, Big Money.

Noreen Thompson took the hot seat on the show after her son was picked out to play but could not attend the show because it clashed with a holiday. Noreen and her husband Jack have been married for thirty-six years. They have three children – Elaine, Gerard and John and it was Gerard who was lucky enough to find his scratch card pulled out of the hat to trigger an invitation for him to go on the show. Gerard is married to Carol and they have a son called Alfie who is three years old and they are expecting another baby in December so the timing could not have been more perfect, except for one thing. They were on holidays in Portugal at the time the show was being filmed so could not participate and so Noreen stepped into the breach and agreed to go on the show to represent her son. Noreen looks after her grandson, Alfie, who is her pride and joy for a few days every week so she is well used to stepping in and helping her son out when she has the chance. Gerard celebrated his birthday on August 13 and he received several scratch cards as gifts and discovered he had three stars on one of them. Noreen helped out again at that point by posting the lucky card off to the National Lottery. The Swords woman clearly remembers posting the scratch card off on a wet day that was notable because it was the the day our Irish Olympians returned home to Dublin. Noreen brought a photo of her grandson Alfie and one of his toys of Fireman Sam on the show with her for luck and plenty of luck it turned out to bring to the Swords family who netted a tidy €28,000 on the show.
