THE COUNCIL is not recommending any new traffic calming measures on the busy Rathbeale Road in Swords and said that cyclists using the footpath in the area is a matter for the Gardai.
Cllr Eugene Coppinger (SP) asked the council: 'What measures can be taken to slow down the traffic on the Rathbeale Road, close to JC's Supermarket and if anything can be done, including erecting signage, to deter cyclists from cycling on the footpath, as it is now a risk to the safety of pedestrians. The council's operations department replied: ' The operations department has recently renewed the yellow box markings on the Rathbeale Road in the vicinity of the entrances to JCs/ Dunnes and Lidl. ' The location will be monitored and the operations department will undertake an analysis of the turning movements at these junctions with a view to determining any necessary measures to improve safety conditions. ' The 'No Cycling' sign, RUS 055, indicates that cycling is prohibited. This sign should only be used where a separate cycle route has been specifically provided. The Operations Department does not recommend the use of this sign in this instance as it would not be appropriate. 'Fingal County Council has notified An Garda Siochana regarding the issue of cyclists using the footpaths as this is a Garda enforcement issue.'
