Pupils from 5th and 6th Class in Milverton National School were very shocked to hear about the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan.

Their teacher, Principal Johnny Tyndall, read out the articles in the newspapers describing the awful events of the previous days. They were determined to do something to help the people affected by the typhoon.

The children discussed various ideas and finally decided they would have a great bake-in to raise funds for those affected by the vicious storm. Friday was going to be a 'Walk to School Day' organised by the Green Schools Committee and they thought it would be a good idea to combine the two events. People were sure to be hungry after walking to school.

They made sure everyone in the school from the smallest Junior Infant up to the oldest teacher knew all about their fund-raising idea.

Thursday afternoon saw many kitchens around Skerries, Balrothery and Balbriggan buzzing with activity as everyone in the class got down to producing as many cakes, cookies, buns and biscuits as they could.

On Friday morning the 5th and 6th Class children set up five tables in the school yard and loaded them down with treats.

The children worked in pairs taking the money and distributing the goodies and there was also a donation box for those who just couldn't fit any more cakes in but still wanted to help. Most of the cakes had disappeared within half an hour - but anything left over got snapped up at break time.

Luckily Friday is treat day so it didn't matter that the children were gobbling so many treats! One granny scooped up several plate-loads and took them off to share with her friends.

Sixth Class had an unusual maths lesson that day - they had to count all the money raised! They counted €870 on Friday but by Monday morning the total had climbed up to €925 as more donations came in.

The classes were delighted with the money they raised while the bank issued a massive presentation cheque for the huge amount. The children really hope that the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan will be helped by their efforts. * Sixth Class, Milverton National School
