Lions donation to fund training for suicide bereavement group
FINGAL Bereaved by Suicide Support Service (FBbySSS) has received a welcome donation of €2,400 from Swords & District Loins Club.
The donation will fund the training of a second new group of 16 volunteers, who have just started their course.
FbbySSS is a voluntary community service set up two years ago, guided by Fingal Counselling Services, in response to the increasing demand for support to individuals and families bereaved by suicide.
The volunteers are trained to listen and provide support. They also visit families in their homes at the request of the family.
Fingal Counselling Service, in the BASE centre in Brackenstown in Swords, had been approached by Fingal Leader Partnership and the HSE Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Officer to train and support such a group of volunteers, thus the FBbySSS was born.
In Ireland today, more people die by suicide than by heart attacks or in road traffic accidents. Research suggests that every suicide touches the lives of up to 100 people. Swords and the surrounding areas are experiencing an increase in the numbers bereaved by suicide.
Fingal Counselling Service at BASE provide the training for the volunteers who wish to become counsellors with a 30-hour training session.
The volunteers learn to understand the effects of suicide on a family, learn listening skills, being able to talk to people and learn about their pain and help get them through their turmoil.
FBbySSS provide a phone line where a caller can request a counselling session. Then, two counsellors call to their home, where the caller can chat in person to the counsellors. The counsellors listen and talk, all in complete confidence, and also provide the caller with a list of other services available to them which can provide more long-term support.
