Hedgerow Society walk

Walkers who took part in the walk to Grace Dieu in Ballyboughal during heritage week.

THE BALLYBOUGHAL Hedgerow Society held a walk to the medieval bridge at Grace Dieu as part of heritage week.

The eco-historical walk was a great success and all were impressed with the 15th century bridges including the Mill Race bridge at Grace Dieu medieval nunnery, near Ballyboughal. Walkers saw the medieval gravestones of the nunnery benefactor Johannes Hurley and of the Abbess Thomasina White from 1506. There was lots of wild sage, meadow sweet flowers and Speckled Wood butterflies along the way.

The snowy white mushrooms looked great but doubt reigned as to their being edible! Participants included Ann Lynch, Freda Heron, Mick Mongey and Dan who composed a great poem about Grace Dieu for the occasion. The next Ballyboughal Hedgerow Society Walk takes place on Sunday, September 16 at 2pm. All those taking part are asked to meet at O'Connors Pub. For further details, contact 086-3638487.
