FINGAL County Council has agreed to meet with a local BMX group and a roller blade skating group in Balbriggan with a view to identifying a permanent facility in the town to suit both sports.

Cllr. Peadar O'Kelly (Lab) raised the issue at the most recent meeting of Balbriggan Town Council where he asked the county council to 'explore the possibility of providing both a BMX facility and a roller blade skating facility in Balbriggan.

The council responded with a report on the issue, which stated: 'The Parks and Heritage Properties Division will engage with the Balbriggan BMX Bike Group and Roller Blade Skating Group with a view to identifying a suitable permanent site/s for both sports in the Balbriggan area.

'An appropriate model for the operation of such facilities will also be considered in discussions with the relevant group or groups.'

Cllr. O'Kelly said the need for such facilities was brought to his attention by some of the youth of Balbriggan who asked him to raise the issue. He said that those involved in the sports currently used places like shopping centres to practice their skills but were looking for an 'official' venue.

He welcomed the council's response and said he looked forward to the result of the council's investigation into the matter.
