THE River Valley Academy Taekwon-Do Club has returned from a World Cup competition in Brighton laden down with an extraordinary haul of 24 medals, including 13 gold medals.

Some 22 competitors from the club travelled to the event along with coach Stephen Cooley and several supporters. This year's World Cup was the biggest one in ITF history, with 1,600 competitors from 45 countries around the world competing. The River Valley Academy travelled as part of the Irish Taekwon-Do Association which also won the Best Association Award at the event. The medalists from the club included Alex Fogarty, Jenny Lehane, Maeve Magee, Katie Moriarty, Ann Marie Tornsey, Sarah Lehane, Fiona Gallagher Payet, Rostick Ivanchuk, Sean Paul O'Halloran, Luke McGrath and Eoin Clifford. For more than two decades, the River Valley Community Centre has been the Dojang' - the training ground for students of the Korean martial art of Taekwon-Do. The club was established by Stephen Cooley ( VI Degree) in 1989 and since then, more than 100 international fighters have been nurtured and trained there. 'It takes commitment and perseverance to get to the top level so the enthusiasm of family is crucial to our endurance,' said Stephen. ' That, along with the strong support we get from the community, is what the club is built on – and we couldn't really have asked for stronger foundations than here in River Valley.'
