Bullying should be made a crime

BALBRIGGAN TOWN Council has called on the Government to make bullying a criminal offence.

Cllr Monica Harford (Lab) proposed a motion calling on the relevant Government department to ' pass legislation or take the necessary steps to have bullying listed as an illegal offence in order to have it dealt with within the courts and give some semblance of hope to the victims who may be contemplating suicide to escape their torment'.

Cllr Harford said that Balbriggan had seen a young person take his life 'allegedly because of bullying' and there was no deterrents in law against bullying. Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Cllr Larry Dunne (FG) agreed and said that there was a need for ' legislation that treats this with the severity it deserves'.
