Des celebrates his 70th in style
RAFF'S on the Corner in Skerries saw the Costello family get together to celebrate the 70th birthday of Des, and the family and friends enjoyed a great evening.
A self-confessed bike fanatic Des had stories to tell of his years around racing and, while three of his sons race bikes, it was stories of other riders and attractions that had everyone in stitches laughing.
Des had his wife Breda at his side along with six of his seven children, as his son Gerard was unable to travel from the country. He also had two of his 14 grandchildren to help him along with the party. The only great-grandchild was naturally at home with the child minder.
Des and Breda are 49 years married, and Breda is now looking forward to having a double celebration next year when they will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary and also her 70th birthday.
Des retired a few years ago, but spent a lot of his working life farming, while the last few years were spent working in St. Ita's in Portrane.
Des is a true road race fan, and loves nothing more than helping the lads prepare their bikes for racing, and also the social scene that goes with the racing.
A true family man, he loves nothing more than spending time helping his sons with their racing efforts, and he also loves to spend time with his grandchildren, and great grandchild.
'I was up with my daughter-in-law Donna on Saturday, and her three year old daughter Lily was there. She asked me was it my birthday? I said that it was, and she came out with this. They have a cake for you with Michael Dunlop on the front of it, and Breda said that there was no cake, but Lily said, oh they have Grandad as I saw it. Even at three she let the cat out of the bag,' smiled Des
Des is again planning a full season racing and he especially loves going to the Isle of Man TT races. The celebrations went into the late hours.
