Fingal County Council has stated that the project is seen as a 'critical link' to the overall coastwal walkway in the region, which has been a long-standing objective in the Development Plan.

Cllr Adrian Henchy, who raised the issue, was informed that the preferred route stretched approximately 6km between Newbridge Demesne and Malahide Demesne.

'A grant of €280,000 has been received from the National Transport Authority to cover planning and design for this project,' a report issued to Cllr Henchy stated..

'These monies are being used to gather the necessary engineering and environmental information for the compilation of Environmental Reports required in order to obtain the planning approvals for this scheme to proceed.

'While funding for construction has not been secured to date, the council considers it likely that this funding will be more readily available following the grant of planning permission for the trail.
