ONCE THE Blue Riband event on the summer seven-a-side calendar, the highly-prized Curracloe United F.C. competition is being relaunched after an absence of 28 years.
First played for in 1974 and attracting up to 48 teams at its peak, the Currach Cup was last won in 1984 by North End.
Indeed, North End were the seven-a-side specialists at the time, winning this cup on no fewer than five occasions and twice under the name Tommy Roches. Other winners included Curracloe United in the inaugural year of 1974, Rhubarb City (Corach Ramblers) in 1976, Curracloe Tigers in 1977 and Bridge Rovers in 1979.
The competition was hugely successful for many reasons, among them being the tight scheduling of fixtures, the use of official referees and the high number and quality of the teams involved.
The Curracloe United seven-a-side 2012 will be run in a group format with each team guaranteed at least three matches. The group winners will progress to the knockout stages.
The tournament is limited to 32 teams on a firstcome, first-served basis. Teams are limited to an eleven-man fixed squad and the cost of entry is €110 per team.
The closing date for entries is July 8, and the competition will commence Monday, July 16, with the group stages being run over the following seven days.

Meanwhile, Tombrack United are holding a pub five-a-side men's soccer tournament next month, kicking off on Sunday, July 15, with the finals on Friday, July 27.
It is almost ten years since the club last held this type of competition and it proved very popular at the time, with some excellent teams lifting the trophy in the past.
The decision has now been made to bring back the competition but in a novel way to see what pub in the area can produce the best group of players.
The entry fee is €100 for a squad of ten and entries will be limited to 16 teams with a cup competition and a plate competition, ensuring that all participants will have a minimum of four games.
For further information, you can contact Peter Doyle on 087-2697074 or firstname.lastname@example.org, and teams must be entered under the name of a licensed premises. The closing date for entries is Friday, July 6, with the draw being made on Monday, July 9, so enter early to ensure you are in the draw.
