AT THE end of the day, it's the three points that count, but Wexford Youths will be happy to have come through this tricky Bus Eireann Women's National League encounter on Sunday last with the win as they dominated the game in very windy conditions, but could only manage the solitary goal.

Cork have yet to pick up a point in the league as they head into the Christmas break but they are getting closer to causing an upset.

And although the home side controlled long periods of this match, with the score at 1-0, it was always a danger that Cork might sneak an equaliser.

The home side went on the attack from the start and caused the Cork defence some issues, with two free kicks just flashing wide and a couple of inswinging corners creating all sorts of problems.

Ciara Rossiter and Edel Kennedy both had good chances before Ashling Frawley brought a top-class save from the Cork 'keeper, and it was obvious that this intense pressure would eventually pay off.

In the 33rd minute, Rossiter found the net with a well-placed shot to give the home side a well-deserved lead.

Cork were reduced to a few long-range free kicks which were easily dealt with by the Wexford defence, and although the score remained the same up to half-time, the home players were disappointed not to be further ahead.

The second-half continued in much the same vein as the first with Rossiter going close again while Aoibheann Webb chipped the 'keeper but the ball was cleared before it crossed the line.

The game played out to a finish with no further goals and although disappointed with the one-goal margin, Wexford moved up to fourth in the table and now have a few days off before resuming preparations for the second half of the season.

The action will resume on January 12 with a league match away to DLR Waves, and it will be all systems go from then on for manager John Flood and his dedicated players as they bid to build on the pleasing progress which has been made.

The club would also like to take this opportunity to wish all our supporters a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year, and we look forward to seeing you in Ferrycarrig Park for our home games in 2014.
