DANNY FURLONG went the extra yard as his first-half hat-trick handed Wexford Youths a hugely-impressive victory over neighbours Waterford United in their Division 1 league clash at the RSC on Friday last.
The visitors went into the game on the back of a disappointing display against league leaders Longford Town the previous week, but the manner in which they bounced back to take all three points keeps them very much in the race for third spot along with Galway United.
The Youths are three points adrift of the westerners, with a game in hand, but with an inferior goal difference, so the destination of that third place will come down to the final games of the campaign.
The goal that started the Youths centre-forward on his scoring spree arrived as early as the eleventh minute when Furlong headed home an Andy Mulligan corner kick.
Clearly the Youths were causing the home side all sorts of problems, adding to their off-field difficulties, as they increased their lead in the 26th minute.
The alert Furlong capitalised on a weak back pass to carry the ball forward, beating advancing 'keeper Craig Burns with a low finish to the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-0.
Furlong was not for missing on the night, as on the half-hour mark he completed a marvellous hat-trick when he fired home from just inside the area, with his right-footed shot leaving Burns helpless in the home goal.
Wexford Youths will be at home this Friday against Shamrock Rovers 'B' with an 8 p.m. kick-off and will be hoping for good support.
Wexford Youths: Graham Doyle, Shane Nolan, Andy Mulligan, Dean Broaders, Killian Cantwell, Stephen Last, Eric Molloy (Barry Cox, 80), Craig Wall, Danny Furlong (Darragh Walshe, 80), Shane Dunne, Aidan Keenan.
