Bunclody in control
HWH-BUNCLODY underlined their superiority over St. Mary's (Rosslare) by hitting five of the last six points in this Lodgewood Engineering Intermediate football championship Group B back fixture in St. Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy, on Sunday last.
The clash of two first round winners was ultimately decided in the last 16 minutes as points from Mylie Connors, Darren Kehoe (three, two frees) and Colm Farrell powered the Carlow border crew home, while Farrell and Connors also struck the crossbar in that spell of near-total dominance when the seasiders were over-run.
Interestingly, HWH-Bunclody led by 1-3 to 0-4 at half-time even though none of their six starting forwards had got on the scoresheet. The key contribution was made by the game's dominant midfielder, James Moorhead, who raced forward to register 1-1, with the goal arriving in the eleventh minute from a Mylie Connors pass.
Rosslare had opened brightly and led by 0-3 to 0-1 midway through the first quarter after points from Barry Quirke (two) and Tiarnan Rossiter, but the latter didn't have the overall impact on the action that neutrals would have expected.
Just two points were shared in the second quarter to leave HWH-Bunclody ahead by 1-3 to 0-4 at the break, with free-taker Darren Kehoe accounting for their other two points. They hit all of their five first-half wides in less than six minutes before the interval and, while Stephen Cogley did make one good save in that spell, in truth at least 1-2 was squandered by the leaders through bad misses.
Mylie Connors extended their advantage just 57 seconds into the new half before Darren Kehoe underlined his prowess from frees taken off the ground with a couple of scores, and he would end up with six fine points from placed balls.
Rosslare lost half-time substitute Robbie Mansfield to a black card in the 41st minute and were toothless in attack, with HWH-Bunclody only prevented from winning by more through wayward shooting as nine wides brought their overall tally to 14.
