Roundabout idea

'I AM against ramps.' Council engineer Mark Collins revealed his true colours last week. He was responding to a suggestion by Cllr James Browne that the speed bumps would encourage motorists to stay under the limit in Patrick Street.

The Fianna Fáil man reckoned that drivers were hitting the accelerator along the street to make up time after being constrained by the ramps in the nearby Ross Road. 'Just ban the cars,' joked Cllr John O'rourke.

During the meeting, Cllr Browne suggested that a roundabout should be considered at the Doyle's-donohoe's junction and also at the Duffry-patrick Street junction. Town manager Tony Larkin pointed out that there is no money in the 2012 budget for any such initiatives.

He commented that the area is very busy and that there are no easy solutions to traffic management.
