Council used to march

COUNCILLORS preparing to sit on the review stand during this year's St Patrick's Day parade have been reminded of a time when public representatives took a more vigorous approach to the event. Cllr Jackser Owens, the current cathaoirleach, revealed that he marched the route last year and found it a great experience.
He recalled that up to 1983, it was standard procedure for the councillors to march rather than sit on the stand and Cllr James Browne remembered being out on foot in the past on March 17 with his father Deputy John Browne.
Seán Óg Doyle explained that the practice ceased due to the health problems of the late Cllr Andy Doyle, whose son Keith is a member of the current council.
