FUTURE Council funding for community groups in Enniscorthy is in doubt, with the anticipated abolition of the Town Council in two years' time.
Members of the Town Council last week handed over a total of €17,000 to 14 community organisations, and Council Chairman Keith Doyle said afterwards he doubted that the new version of the Council will have any such funding for the local groups.
Among the recipients were: Slaney Sharks Swimming Club; Enniscorthy Community Games; St. Patrick's Squash Club; Slaney Olympic Althletics Club; Schools Soccer Coaching Scheme; Ajax Athletic Club; Enniscorthy Pugin Society; Meanscoil Gharman; Templeshannon Community; Enniscorthy Town FC; Enniscorthy United FC; Enniscorthy Choral Society; Irish Girl Guides; and the Royal British Legion Wexford branch.
Cllr. Doyle said that most of the groups received € 1,000 each though the amounts varied according to the projects involved and the amounts applied for.
' It's something the Council does every year,' he said. 'Unfortunately it will change when the Council is wound down, and it's definitely the second last year of this, if not the last.'
' It's just an acknowledgement of the good work that organisations, groups and clubs do in the local community,' he added. ' The Councillors feel that if they can give a little helping hand for various projects, they can try to be there for groups. It was a good idea while it lasted, but I'm fearful that it won't continue with the new make up of the Council.'
