THE CREW of Courtown RNLI Lifeboat has taken delivery of a new set of lifejackets, which were funded through the sale of the 2012 Lifeboat calendar.
The lifejackets were unveiled at the launch of the 2013 calendar in The Taravie Hotel in Courtown, during a fundraising coffee morning on Saturday.
Aine Stafford, PRO of Courtown Lifeboat, said the RNLI continually looks to advance and improve its safety equipment. 'In the 1850s, narrow strips of cork were sewn onto a canvas vest so the lifejacket could move with the body,' she said. ' Today crew lifejackets reflect decades of technological advancements. The new designs are more ergonomic and fitted to let the individual swim unhindered to aid casualties.'
' They are lighter and more buoyant and will support the weight of a casualty being brought to safety by a crew member in the water,' she added.
' They also have a luminous spray hood with visor, which can be pulled over the crewmember's head if they are in water, to protect against sea spray, while also making them highly visible.'
This year's Courtown Lifeboat calendar is for sale in many local outlets such as The Taravie Hotel, Courtown Sea Angling Shop, the Corner Shop Courtown, the RNLI Shop on the north pier, or from any committee member.
The calendar and RNLI Christmas cards featuring a local Courtown Christmas card, will be on sale in Gorey Shopping Centre this Saturday, November 10, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Courtown Lifeboat thanked all who submitted pictures for the calendar and all who sponsored the printing of the calendar. Thanks also went to all who attended the annual coffee morning in the Taravie Hotel.
