IT APPEARS that Cllr. Lorcan Allen once purchased canons to be placed outside Council buildings in Gorey, and he now wants them to go on display. However, other councillors at the monthly meeting of Gorey Town Council last week, worried that such large guns would send out the wrong message.

Somewhat out of the blue, Cllr. Lorcan Allen announced that he'd once bought canons for the Council, and he felt they should go at the front of the Civic Offices on The Avenue. He asked that this now be done.

However, Cllr. Colin Webb wondered if it would be appropriate to put canons at that location. He pointed out that the Civic Square was finished to a particular design.

'Anything that I would want, you would be against,' hit back Cllr. Allen.

The Chairman Cllr. Michael D'Arcy Snr. sought to settle the matter by suggesting a report be prepared on the matter.

Director of Services Eddie Taaffe revealed that this was the first he'd heard of it. 'We would need to look at it and come back with a report,' he said.

Cllr. Robert Ireton said that this was the first he'd heard of it in his 10 years on the Council. 'When was it decided to buy these?' he asked. 'We should be advocating peace in the week that one of the greatest world leaders was buried. 'It beggar's belief.'
