ATHLETES galore from days of yore will have their exploits recalled in a book to be launched next week, entitled 'Our Sporting Past'.
The book by Jim Parle is a history of local sporting heroes from the world of track and field, cross country, cycling and tug of war from 1877 up until 1967.
Ferns natives the O'Neill brothers form Bolinadrum, Martin Dunbar, Paddy Doyle, the O'Neills from Charlesland, the Sliabh Buidhe Club and the Lacken tug of war team of 1924 all feature in the book.
Others to feature include national high jump champion Liam O'Leary from Bunclody; the weightlifting Mahon brothers from Gurteen; Thomas O'ConnorDunbar from Clohamon, who won All-Ireland title in the 100 yards and 200 yards races in 1913, and Matty Lyons, a road runner from the early 1900s.
'Our Sporting Past' will be officially launched on Wednesday evening (November 14) at 8 p.m. by Pat Kelly of Athletics Ireland at the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy. It will cost €25, with a special offer of just €20 in force on launch night.
