YOUNG SHOWJUMPERS rubbed shoulders with Aga Khan winning rider Francis Connors as the awards for the Wexford gymkhana season just ended were handed out. The Wexford region of the SJI gathered at the Cloch Bán in Clonroche to present the high achievers in various age groups from 10 to 16.
They were welcomed by regional chairman Michael Doyle from Ballinaslaney in Oylegate, who recalled that the past summer was repeatedly disrupted by soft going. The incessant rains affected both grass tracks and sand surfaced arenas, though the standard of jumping remained high.
By way of inspiration, guest of honour Francis Connors pointed out that several of the riders whose names are inscribed on the Cloch Ban Mickey trophy, for instance, have since gone on to make their mark elsewhere. Both David Mullins from County Carlow and Colm Murphy from Foulksmills are recent winners as jockeys on the National Hunt circuit.
