THE next tour for members of North Wexford Historical Society will be held on Saturday, July 26.

We will leave from Gorey Civic Centre at 8 a.m. sharp and travel to Waterford where we will visit Reginald's Tower, The Medieval Museum and The Bishop's Palace Museum. There will also be a walking tour of the city. Cost €25, not including lunch or coffee breaks.

As part of the Gorey Market House Festival to be held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the Society will be putting on an exhibition of the history and heritage of North Wexford in the Market House. If anyone has historical artefacts of special interest that they would be willing to lend to the Society for the duration of the exhibition please contact Willie on 053 9421215 or 086 8742955 before July 28. The exhibition will be open on Saturday, August 2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, August 3, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Admission free.

GOREY WHIST

TOP score winners at the Gorey Whist Drive last week were: Sean Murphy and Naomi Tomkins. In the ladies' section, Kathleen Carr and Tess Enright were first; Rosarii Gillick was second; and Chrissie Kinsella and Nellie Donegan were the half-time winners. In the gents' section, Cyril Bryan was first; Michael Murphy was second; and Frances Sinnott was third. The half-time winner was Anne Slator.

ART COMPETITION

THE TATE Guerin Gallery at Wells House is holding a Summer Art Competition. Submissions are welcome until July 26. The theme is 'From Soil to Blossom.'

The winners will be announced on Sunday, July 27, at 5 p.m. An exhibition of the entries will run from July 27 to August 3.

HOLIDAY BIBLE CLUB

A FREE Kids Camp for 5 to 12 year-olds is being held from July 28, to August 1, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the gym at Gorey Community School. Children will enjoy games, crafts, stories, quizzes and prizes. The camp is free of charge and run by Gorey Christian Assembly. To register call/text Shirley on 086 1280148.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY

JANE Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility' will be performed on the front lawn of Wells House on the evening of Tuesday, July 22, next. Chapterhouse Theatre will perform the classic tale, and audience members are invited to bring a picnic along.

The recommended arrival time is 6.30 p.m. and the event will go ahead even if there is rain. Guests are asked to bring their own seating, cushions, or blankets. The event is wheelchair accessible. Book through www.wellshouse.ie

Then on Sunday, July 27, the Irish Specialist Nurseries Association will host their plant fair on the grounds of Wells House.

GOREY SUMMER BRIDGE

THE WINNERS at Gorey Summer Bridge on Wednesday, July 2, were as follows: 1, Phyllis O'Sullivan and Mary Devereux; 2, June Coogan and Kerry O'Connor. On Monday, July 7, the winners were: 1, Sean Stafford and Kay Slattery; 2, James and Margaret Maguire; 3, Eileen and Dermot Creed.

LEARN WHIST

WOULD you like to learn to play Whist? It's a way of meeting new people and enjoying a social evening and a friendly relaxed game of cards. It costs just €5 per evening with tea and snacks served in the interval.

Lessons will be held during July and August in the hall in Bunclody on Monday nights at 8 p.m.; in St. Michael's Church Hall, Gorey, on Tuesday nights at 7.30 p.m.; and in Kilanerin Hall on Wednesday nights at 7.30 p.m.

NWSPCA LOTTO

THE July winning numbers for the NWSPCA's monthly fundraising lotto draw were: 4, 6, 8 and 21. There was no winner of the €4,800 jackpot and three tickets were pulled out in the lucky dip draw. These winners were: Millie Nolan, Seamus Delahunty and Eileen Maher.

It was an exciting draw as one of the Lotto players came very close to hitting the jackpot with 4, 6, 8 and 19.

Next month's lotto jackpot increases to €4,850 and the draw will be held on Monday August 11 in the Loch gCarman Arms, Gorey.

The lotto also has a multi-draw facility where people can enter the draw up to six months in advance.

You select the same numbers and they are automatically submitted every month. Ask sellers for details.

IUNVA MEETING

THE NEXT meeting of the IUNVA Post 28 - North Wexford Branch, will be held on Tuesday, July 15, in The Loch gCarman Arms, Gorey, at 8 p.m. All old and new members welcome.

JAM COMPETITION

GOREY Market House Festival is looking for Ireland's best pot of jam.

Jam makers are invited to bring along their best jams to the street market on Saturday, August 2, for judging. The categories include: Best Strawberry Jam; Best Raspberry Jam; and Best Unusual Combination; Best Jam made by a junior; Best 'Man-Made' Jam; and'Most Artistic Label'.

Entries will be taken from Saturday, July 26, at the Market House Craft and Design Centre, Main Street, Gorey; and Gorey Civic Centre (Monday to Friday only).

Entries will be accepted up until 10 am on August 2, the day of the competition. The winners will be announced at 2 p.m. The cost of a single entry is €2 and/or €5 per three entries.

GOREY LIBRARY

JULY is a busy month at Gorey Library. Events include:

Russian Literature: Join Anna Danilova and learn more about Russian romantic poet and writer Mikhail Lermontov on Tuesday, July 22, and July 29, from 7 p.m. to 8.45 p.m. This event is free but places must be booked.

Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge: Primary school children are invited to join Gorey Library for the summer reading challenge Mythical Maze. Read six books in July and August to complete the challenge and collect a book bag and goodies along the way. Contact Gorey Library to register.

Mythical Maze Art Workshop: Children taking part in the Summer reading challenge are invited to join artist Ilva Krama for a fun maze making masterclass on Tuesday, July 15. Children from 5 to 7 years take the workshop from from11 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., children from 8 to 12 take part. This event is free but places must be booked and parents must stay with children in the library at these events.

Fizz, Pop and Bang: This is a hands-on science workshop with Michelle Maher from Scientastic for children taking part in the summer reading challenge on Wednesday, July 30, from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. This event is free but places must be booked and parents must stay with children in the library.

Reel Time Movies: Gorey Library will show reel time movies from the DVD collection each Tuesday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. in July.

Safety Around Dogs: Dogs Trust return to Gorey Library to give a workshop on Safety Around Dogs for children aged 7 to 12 on Thursday, July 31, at 11.30 a.m.

Dogs Trust Education Officer, Deirdre Uí Dhubhda, accompanied by Walt, the Dogs Trust Safety Dog, will deliver an educational workshop for children. The workshop will teach children the golden rules of how to safely interact with dogs; will highlight different safety scenarios; and discuss body language and more. Booking is essential.

CONSOLE CONCERT

SOPRANO Carmel O'Connor will hold a concert in aid of Console, Wexford, on Saturday, August 23, at 8 p.m. in The Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey. Carmel will be joined on stage by Tenor Darren Mooney and guest violinist Maciej Motyka and the students of the Carmel O'Connor Vocal Academy, Gorey. There will also be a raffle on the night.

CRAANFORD FIELD DAY

CRAANFORD Vintage Rally and Field Day is sure to draw the crowds on Sunday, July 20, from 2 p.m. It promises lots of attractions including the finest vintage cars and tractors, a dog show, bouncy castles, a goldfish stall, a duck race, a bric a brac stall, a wheel of fortune, a bottle stall, strawberries and cream, burgers, cakes, tea, a raffle, and much more.

MOVIE COURSE

A MAKE A Movie Course will run for five days in Gaelscoil Moshíológ, Gorey, from July 28 to August 1.

The course will teach students about modern filmmaking, with classes in scriptwriting, directing, camerawork, acting, editing and more.

The course is open to teenagers aged 13-18 and children aged 9-12.

CONRADH na Gaeilge Guaire holds conversation nights on Tuesdays throughout the summer in the Bridge Bar, Gorey, from 7.30 p.m. onwards, and on Saturday mornings in The Purple Sage Café, Main Street, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m..

MARKET HOUSE STALLS

A CALL has gone out for Artisan Crafts, Jewellery and Food Stall holders to take part in the Market House Summer Fair on Main Street, Gorey, on Sunday, August 3, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. The closing date for bookings is Friday, July 18. SUMMER PLAY

GOREY Theatre Group presents the first of its summer plays: 'The Shaughran' every Tuesday and Thursday evening in July at 8.30 p.m. in Gorey Little Theatre. Tickets are €10, and are available at the door each night. 'The Shaughran' is Don Bouccicault's Nineteenth Century melodrama, set in Co. Sligo. It is directed by Imelda Mc Donagh.

PHILHARMONIA CONCERT

THE Chamber Philharmonia Cologne will perform in concert on Tuesday, August 12, at 8 p.m. in Christ Church, Gorey. The diverse programme will include works by Vivali, Mozart, and Rossini.

ROCK FIELD DAY

THIS year the Gorey Active Retirement Association Mystery Tour will take place on Tuesday, August 20. The day will include two places of interest, light lunch, evening meal and dancing. SPCA SHOP

THE NWSPCA Charity Shop, on Rafter Street in Gorey, is accepting donations of stock - clothes, shoes, accessories and bags to raise funds for animal welfare.

The Shop will also take giftware, DVD's, books, and CD's. The shop is totally voluntary so every cent raised stays in North Wexford spent on the provision of animal welfare services. The shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pop in with your donations, or call in and pick up a bargain.

THE Sue Ryder Charity shop in Gorey welcomes donations of clothes, footwear, bric-a-brac, books, DVD's, bed linen, and furniture in good condition. We can collect furniture. A BRAND new production of 'War and Peace' by Prokifiev, will be live in Movies@Gorey from the Mariinsky Festival, St. Petersburg, on Wednesday, July 16, at 6.30 p.m. David Hare's 'Skylight' featuring Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan, will be broadcast live on Thursday, July 17, at 7 p.m. from the National Theatre, London. Monty Python Live (mostly) will be broadcast on Sunday, July 20, at 7 p.m., with an encore on Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m. Broadcast from London's O2 Arena, Monty Python Live (mostly) will play in cinemas around the globe.
