Joan O'Rourke from Carleysbridge will feature as a competitor in the 'Simply Be Curvy 2014' competition to find a model who will feature on a fashion catalogue. The Enniscorthy 34 year old was selected from more than 5,000 entries and she is due to appear on the 'Xposé' show, starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, October 7.
The third Gerard Murphy memorial vintage car road run on Sunday, October 6 in Ferns will include an attempt on the record for the most Ford Capris ever assembled in one place in Ireland. The event which raises funds for Console will take the Capris and the rest of the convoy on a journey to Enniscorthy, Ballycarney, Ballymurphy, Graiguenamanagh, Borris, Mount Leinster and Bunclody before returning back to base in Ferns. 'Awareness of suicide is what we are at,' explained organiser Paddy Murphy, whose son is commemorated by the event. 'It will be great to get the support.'
Enniscorthy shopkeepers are promoting a series of 'Hot Deals' as they battle to retain the loyalty of shoppers in their district. The deals brochure for October lists bargains, ranging from two pairs of jeans for €20 to a couple of pounds of mince for €6. And it comes with a promise of more 'Hot Deals' in November, with yet more to come in December. The Enniscorthy business association estimates that there are 264 businesses of various kinds active in the town centre, with close to 1,500 people employed.
First in the recent Wednesday bridge competition at The Bailey were Maria Whelan and Jim Sexton, with Pat Kelly and Dorothy Davis runners up, while Kathleen Kelly and Bob Murphy were third, and Kathleen Lennon and Aidan 'Ogie' Nolan fourth.
The annual general meeting of the Enniscorthy Strawberry Festival takes place tonight (Tuesday, October 1) at 7 p.m. in the Riverside Park hotel. All members and intending members are invited to take part as the 2013 fair is reviewed, a committee elected and plans are laid for next year.
MCDONALD ON STAGE
London-based balladeer James McDonald is the special guest at the Presentation centre in Enniscorthy on Thursday, October 3 (8 p.m.). The Gorey singer comes to help launch the newly posted website of the 'Song Collectors Collective'. Members of the collective record the old songs and stories of communities overlooked by the general media. If attending, bring along a WiFi or 3G enabled tablet such as an iPads, the better to browse the website on the spot.
HarperCollins published novelist Carmel Harrington will read from her award winning 'Beyond Grace's Rainbow' in Enniscorthy's public library on Thursday, October 3 at 7 p.m. The Screen resident is also set to discuss her transformation from self-published author to signing a deal with a well known firm of publishers. Rathnure pantomime society is making the initial moves towards staging another brand new Christmas show to be staged in December. The WexFactor 2013 talent showcase seeks young solo musicians and bands to compete for the prize of sound recording studio time and the opportunity to play on the same as a headline act at Strawberry Festival 2014.
