Don't axe education - teachers

ENNISCORTHY district primary teachers have been keeping up the pressure on the Government to spare education the worst of the spending cuts. A delegation of INTO members met Minister of State Paul Kehoe last week to make their case in advance of the Budget.

The delegation comprised branch chairman, Andy Hanrahan from Monageer NS; branch secretary, John Brennan from Scoil Mochua in Oulart; Peter Creedon of St. Aidan's primary school in Enniscorthy and Oona Rackard of St. Senan's primary school in Enniscorthy.

The teachers stressed that class sizes are already the second highest in Europe, while overcrowded classrooms make it impossible to improve numeracy and literacy. School maintenance spending is under pressure, they pointed out to the Government Chief Whip, worried that many school buildings will drop below standard.
