The community of The Ballagh gathered at Ballaghkeene National School on Sunday as the board of management and the parents' association welcomed parents and members of the community to the official opening of the school's new extension, as well as the official launch of a book celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Around 300 people gathered to witness Bishop Denis Brennan performing the official opening of the extension, which consists of a classroom extension, a new corridor and an office.
'It's a brilliant addition to the school,' said Elizabeth Ormonde Freeman, secretary of the parents' association. 'Previously the children would have had to come outside in order to go from class to class, so it was far from ideal. We weren't too long waiting for it to be done. I think the school applied in 2011, it was approved in 2012 and building work was completed by September of 2013.'
Among those present at the ceremony were Fr Dermot Gahan, Fr Paddy Browne and TD John Browne.
'The book we launched was to celebrate 40 years of the school,' added Elizabeth. 'We celebrated the milestone last year with the school first opening its doors in 1973. We thought the book would be a nice way to mark it. Basically we have pieces from staff and pupils past and present, recalling their time at Ballaghkeene National School. There are also some lovely photos in the book and we're very happy with how it turned out.'
