A total of 72 competitors lined the shore at evenly spaced interval for a busy day of catch and release fishing in cold but calm and sunny weather. 'It was a great success, one of the better years,' said Joe Byrne of Courtown Angling, organiser of the competition.
'It was a great day. Everything went really well,' he continued. 'The fishing was very good.'
Overall winner of the competition was Dave Rowe from Dublin, while the four zone winners were as follows: Paul Tindle, Dublin; Ken Forsythe, Dublin; James Ryan, Wexford; and Shea O'Neill, Dublin.
In the Junior section, the winners were: 1, Sean Cushen, Wexford; 2, David Farrelly, Dublin; 3, Eamonn Jones, Kilmore.
The competition was won with a total of 42 fish caught; while the zone winners caught between 30 and 36 fish each. Species caught included flounder, dab, and whiting.
Prizegiving was held in the Courtown RNLI boathouse afterwards, where the participants were treated to cups of steaming hot soup, rolls, and sandwiches. A total of €957 was raised for the charity.
Thanks were sent to all who took part in the event; all the members of Courtown Angling Club for helping on the day; the RNLI fundraising committee for providing the refreshments; David and Aine of the RNLI for their help at check in, and for providing beach transport; Paul Hardy from YUKI for sponsorship; and all who supported the event in any way.
