THE DANGERS of cyber-bullying were highlighted to older pupils in three local primary schools last week, when Courtown's new Garda Sergeant paid a visit.

Sgt. Margo Kennedy was accompanied by Carol O'Reilly from the ISPCC as they spoke to pupils in Riverchapel NS, Ballygarrett NS, and Ballycanew NS, about staying safe online.

'I arranged for the ISPCC to come down, because cyber-bullying is so prevalent now,' said Sgt. Kennedy. 'For the last couple of years, there has been a huge concern among parents and teachers in relation to children being the victim of cyber bullying. It is important to take steps to prevent it.'

She added that children often don't realise they are being subjected to cyber-bullying. 'Parents should be aware of what they are looking up and what social networking sites they are active on,' she said.

Wexford native Sgt. Kennedy took up her post in Courtown at the end of September, having transferred from Tallaght. The Courtown Garda team has strengthened, with Garda Patrick Malone from Gorey, joining Garda Paul Buckley and Garda James Whelan on the team.

Sgt. Kennedy has spent the past few months getting to know the local community. 'The local people are very friendly,' she said. 'A lot of people have moved down from Dublin to the Riverchapel area, and it can be a big change for some, living in a country area.'

She said they try to keep the Courtown Station open when they can, but they can't keep set hours as they're often out on patrol. It's hoped to hold a public meeting in Riverchapel in the near future to give people the chance to discuss any issues of concern.

'We're there to help people in the community and if they need assistance, they can call us at the Station on 053 9421501,' she said.
