Two newly promoted teams go head to head

Published 02/10/2013 | 05:28

THE two promoted clubs clashed head on in the weekend's only Under-12 Premier game and it was hosts Boyne Rovers who prevailed at St Joseph's CBS.

Town had the game's first chance and Rovers keeper Jane Kinsella did well to keep her goal intact in those early stages, but it was the home side who struck first when Jack Taaffe set up Josef Bergin who netted with a shot to the bottom left corner of the Town net.

Goal two came from the same source as Alan Magee's pass was deflected into the path of Bergin who made no mistake.

Drogheda Town regrouped and halved the deficit through Dean Almond, before deservedly drawing level with a goal from Dylan Dyas.

However, it was Rovers who took a narrow 3-2 into the interval, thanks to Magee who was quickest to breaking ball outside the penalty area.

There was frustration for Rovers early in the second half as Hubert Rokosz, Shane Murphy, Jakob Matthews and Killian Nolan each got into one-on-one situations, only to be ruled offside, while skipper Mark Harris was foiled when his free kick was smothered by the Town keeper.

Rokosz eventually toe-poked goal four from a Magee cross, and Nolan made it 5-2 when he collected a Taaffe pass and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Town never gave up and grabbed their third goal when Jason Doyle scored from the left side of the penalty box, but Rovers sensibly kept the ball in the opposition half for the remaining time to see out the victory.

Boyne Rovers: Jane Kinsella; Evan Swaine; Jack Browne; Mark Harris; Lennon Corrigan; Alan Magee; Andrew Collier; Daire O'Rourke; Jack Taaffe; Josef Bergin; Liam Mulligan; Jakob Matthews; Shane Murphy; Hubert Rokosz; Killian Nolan; Sam Cooley; Noelle Coyle; Danny Drkan; Padraig Brown.
