NEWLY-CROWNED DDSL Under-9C league champions Drogheda Boys finished their campaign in style with a home win against Broadford Rovers on Saturday afternoon.
Five minutes into the game, Broadford looked like they were going to spoil the party when they got behind the Drogheda defence and opened the scoring with a well-taken goal.
However, the Boys responded and equalised with a super finish by James Harper, following good work in midfield by Shane McAllister.
Broadford fought back and took the game to the home side, who were relieved to see a Rovers free kick from the edge of the box fly narrowly over the bar.
But on the stroke of halftime the Boynesiders pulled ahead when Shayne Hodgins cut inside and beat the keeper from an acute angle to find the corner of the net.
In the second half, Drogheda found their passing range and, playing some lovely football, increased their lead.
Brandon McArdle picked out Thomas McCann with a pinpoint pass from deep in his own half. McCann pushed upfield and unleashed a powerful strike, which struck the Rovers upright.
Jamie Ormiston was on hand to follow up and he coolly tucked the ball away to double the home side's advantage.
Afterwards the Drogheda Boys team and proud parents and guardians celebrated their league win and now look forward to the summer break after a long but rewarding season. DROGHEDA BOYS squad: Nathan Carroll, Josh Carvin, Adam Harper, James Harper, Shayne Hodgins, Craig Johnston, William Kalabor, Shane McAllister, Brandon McArdle, Thomas McCann, Matthew McCreedy, Jamie Ormiston, Niall Weldon.
