Entertaining match at chilly Deer Park

A THOROUGHLY entertaining seven-goal affair at a chilly Deer Park on Saturday morning saw Drogheda Boys Under-11s return home with all three points.
First blood went to the visitors when Michael Soyemi latched onto a fine through-ball from Kyle McElroy to score, but Mount Merrion's response was emphatic as they immediately carved out two openings to eke out a 2-1 lead.
By half-time, however, parity had been restored as Soyemi started and finished a move that also involved Eoghan Maguire and PJ McCrae.
Drogheda were in command on the restart and McElroy wasa unlucky to be foiled by the Merrion keeper after a lovely back-heel from Michael Leddy had created the chance.
The lead goal wasn't long in coming, however, as Anthony O'Donnell played a quick free kick to Josh Walls who fired home.
Walls then struck again for 4-2, cutting inside from the right flank before scoring at the second attempt after his initial effort had come back off the post.
It was all going the way of Drogheda at this stage, with Alex Agbonifo and Fionn Maher going close and Maguire seeing his spectacular free kick tipped over the bar by the busy Merrion keeper.
The hosts survived that purple patch and managed to score a late consolation goal, but the Boynesiders were the deserving winners.
