DROGHEDA Boys under -14 A team league encounter ended in defeat as the South Dublin side clinched the win in the final 10 minutes.
In the opening half the Drogheda lads were very sharp and focused and Jamie McCormack was unlucky not to score after his shot struck the crossbar.
Despite having the lions share of the play, Drogheda found themselves behind when Mount Merrion launched a swift counterattack and scored a fine goal. The teams were level on the stroke of half-time though when Dylan Kirwan converted from the penalty spot. Prior to that the Dublin outfit was under severe pressure prior and their goalkeeper had to make a number of fine saves from Andy Smith and Conor Pap.
In the second-half the home side had the majority of possession and the midfield pairing of Steven McDonnell and Gary Keogh performed strongly.
But again Mount Merrion counter attacked and cut through the home defence with a well worked goal which was against the run of play. The lead however did not last long as Kirwan blasted the ball home with his second penalty strike.
Drogheda almost took the lead when Pap's header flashed inches over the cross bar from McDonnell's cross on the right wing. The boys were then stunned in a four minute spell when they conceded two goals which put the game out of reach.
Best for Drogheda Boys were Dylan Kirwan and Conor Pap. DROGHEDA BOYS — Jamie Byrne, Shane Whelan, Danny Battersby, Joe Clarke, Conor Pap, Mark Healy, Steven McDonnell, Gary Keogh, Jamie McCormack, Andy Smith, Mark Healy, Dylan Kirwan, Paul Madojutimi, Luke Haggins, Joey Hanratty.
