ABBEY Celtic leapfrogged Oldcastle into second place in the Division 2 table but had to work hard for all three points at the Meath venue on Sunday.
The Drogheda side gifted Oldcastle the opening goal in the 10th minute following a mix-up between centre-half Kevin McGeough and keeper Damien Farrell, but McGeough went from villain to hero mid-way through the first half with a 25-yard free kick which nestled in the bottom corner of the net.
McGeough then tapped another free kick into the path of Philly Meegan who made it 2-1, and after the break a good move involving Martin Kelly and Ricky Burke led to a third goal for the latter.
Oldcastle then pulled a goal back, though, and Abbey didn't finally secure victory until the 86th minute when Jason Reynolds gave them some breathing space by making it 4-2.
Best on the day for Abbey Celtic were Craig O'Connor, McGeough and captain Chris Culligan.
