Strong run from Gareth in Dublin Half Marathon

THE last of the popular Dublin Race Series, the Dublin Half Marathon, took place on Saturday in an almost carnival-like atmosphere.
First past the post for Drogheda & District AC was Gareth Curren who ran a strong race from start to finish and flew round the course in a time of 1:24:56, placing him 20th in the M40 category. Second home for the club was Stephen Duggan, hot on the pace set by Gareth and finishing in a time of 1:25:07. Enda Collins was third club man to finish in 1:26:19
Mary Leech was the club's top lady on the day, finishing the race in 1:33:14 and sixth in the highly-competitive F35 category. Terri Durnin was the second club girl, coming fifth in her category to over the 13.1 miles in 1:38:43, while Marion Doherty was just a few seconds back in a time of 1:38:47.
Yasmin Canning made an impressive debut at the half-marathon distance, crossing the finishing line in 1:40:10, ninth in her category, while Nuala Reilly ran a great race in the Drogheda & District AC vest, finishing in 1:43:28 to claim third in the F55 category.
Other notable performances came on the day from Gillian Farrelly, Grace Black, Kate Williams, Margo Duffy, Joanne Mallon and Fiona Gogarty who all completed the half marathon, ensuring PBs in the process.
Elsewhere, Sunday saw the cross-country season begin in earnest with the Star of the Sea event in Stamullen.
Local fireman Paul Smith ran a strong race to place third in the senior 6km race, finishing in a time of 21:27, while Pat O'Grady placed second in the M50 race in 21:51 and Giancarlo Orlandi won the M60 category in 26:15.
Nuala Reilly, fresh from the Dublin Half Marathon 24 hours previously, won the W50 category!
