CUSHINSTOWN AC's two representatives on the Ireland team for last Saturday's Schools International in Cardiff enjoyed a near perfect day as both scooped individual gold medals.

Cardiff was the venue for the championships and both Keith Marks and Elizabeth Morland were selected on the 70-strong Irish under-17 team, based on their performance in the recent Tailteann Games.

Marks, a student in Ashbourne Community School but a native of Duleek, began the High Jump competition at a starting height of 1.85m and then went on to clear 1.90m, 1.95 and 2.00m on his first attempt, securing the gold medal and precious points for the Irish team in the process. He was one of only two athletes on the day to retain his international title, having won his first in Santry last year.

Morland was selected for the Girls Long Jump and 4x300m Relay, and in the individual event she jumped the most consistent of the field with jumps of 5.60, 5.74, 5.82, 5.84 and 5.87m. Her personal best jump of 5.87m secured Morland the gold medal, valuable points for the team and her first international title, to add to her recent double All-Ireland titles.

She later ran as part of the 4x300m Relay team, taking up the baton on the third leg and helping the Irish team achieve the silver medal position.

Both the boys and girls Irish teams finished second overall in the championships.
