A LEINSTER high jump record for Emma Cheshire was the highlight of the weekend from a Dunleer AC point of view at the provincial championships at Athlone IT.
Aged only 13 but competing in the Under-15 age group, Emma cleared 1.61m, but she was placed only second on countback as the first three athletes all jumped the new provincial record height.
It was also a memorable day for Erin Orr who achieved a personal best in the Under-14 Long Jump and also reached the 60m Hurdles final in her age group.
Apart from those two, the versatile Dunleer AC athletes competed in a range of events on Saturday, with Shane Cheshire in the 400m, Kevin Ledwith, Aisling Matthews, Ciara Matthews and Seoda Matthews in the hurdles, Alannah Greene in the 600m and Saoirse Holmes and Ruth Flanagan in the long jump.
On Sunday, Garry Campbell recorded another fine victory with a gold medal performance in the Boys Under-18 800m. Garry has had a great indoor season so far in 2014, with two National Juvenile titles under his belt at 800m and 1500m, together with a final placing in the Senior Men's Indoor 800m.
Sunday brought more good news from Athlone with another huge leap from Emma Cheshire, this time in the long jump. Emma received the silver medal for her efforts and rounded off a great weekend with a place in the 60m sprint decider.
Emma finished a fine fifth in the final, while Ruairi Hanlon qualified for the final of the 60m.
