RECENTLY- FORMED club Duleek & District AC held its inaugural awards night in the D Hotel the weekend before last where a celebration took place of the its first six months in existence.
The night started off with a Prosecco wine reception, followed by a four-course meal, with club PRO Ruairí Nestor, sporting a 007-esque tuxedo, as the Master of Ceremonies.
Ruairí introduced special guest Fr John Conlon, Duleek/Bellewstown Parish Priest, whose 'unfaltering support' was instrumental to the club's success, he said. In particular Fr. Conlon had facilitated the club by allowing them to use the Parish Centre and adjoining field as a base for the children's 'Little/ Athletics' programmes.
The second special guest was Mr Gary Tierney, entrepreneur, local employer and successful businessman whose company 'Supremeclean' (www.supremeclean. was the club's main sponsor during 2012. Mr Tierney is the husband of one of the club's founding members, Celena.
Following an entertaining and often hilarious opening address by the Master of Ceremonies, the awards were presented to club members, in a number of categories:
Club Ambassador - Ray Cassin; Most Improved Athlete - Michelle Clarke; Most committed athlete - Mick Lanigan; Best personal achievement - Melissa Crosby; Special Recognition - Ryan Finnegan; Good attitude award - Rosie Hartford; Good leadership skills - Conor Flaherty; Good team spirit award - Jenny Foran & Bernie McGuinness (joint winners); Best attendance award - Orla Hillman; Junior Fit4Life award - Amy Lowthe.
The most prestigious awards of the night were then presented, with the Athlete of the Year going to Liam Walsh and the Club Member of the Year to Gillian Lanigan.
In recognition of his achievements in the first six months of the fledgling club, chairperson Fran Power was taken by surprise when he was then presented with an engraved crystal bowl by other members of the club's committee. In his typical droll, understated manner, the first question that Fran jokingly asked, having been presented with his crystal, was: 'Who sanctioned money for this award!'
Once the presentation of awards was completed, a short video was shown to those present, highlighting the views of parents and club members on the club, its accomplishments in the first six months of existence and its plans for the future.
The video even included a personal address from American President Barack Obama and Mr Bill Gates (cleverly created animations)!
