EVENTUAL champions St Pat's Drumcondra ended DkIT's Trench Cup dream last Friday afternoon at a star-studded Sigerson weekend in Queens University.
With Ciaran Kilkenny, Cormac Costello and Sena Kilbride in their forward line, the Dublibn outfit were hot favourites and they duly delivered, with comprehensive semi-final and final wins, the latter against Leterkenny IT the following day.
St Pat's won the toss and decided to play with the very strong wind at their back. They had three points on the scoreboard before Paul Grant fired over for DkIT in the 13th minute.
The DkIT defense were closing down all avenues and frustrating the student teachers with Colm Smith, Niall McGovern and Conor Finnegan playing exceptionally well.
However, all this hard work was coming undone up front as time after time poor handling and decision making resulted in turnovers for St Pats, who continued to catch DkIT on the back foot.
Kilkenny netted their first goal in the 16th minute, but DkIT fought back with Owen Coyle and Mark Neary flexing their muscle around the middle.
Robbie Quigley got on the end of a long ball in and fired to the back of the net and this was quickly followed up by a Keith McLaughlin point leaving the score 1-2 to 1-3 after 22 minutes.
St Pat's would finish the half stronger though, sending over four unanswered points. Despite this DkIT still felt positive as they now had the stiff breeze to aid them and within a minute of the restart Conor Finnegan slotted over.
St Pat's had other plans though and notched it up another gear dominating all areas of the field.
Try as they might DkIT couldn't match this increased intensity and St Pat's ran out comfortable winners on a 3-13 to 1-8 scoreline.
