Reds bring down the Royals
LOUTH wrestled the Damien Reid Perpetual Cup from holders Meath at Darver last Sunday.
The hosts raced into a 1-3 lead early on with Emmett Kirk scoring the goal from a penalty after 10 minutes. Chris O'Neill eventually got Meath off the mark with a point on 17 minutes and the Royals had the better of the exchanges for the remainder of the half. They notched five more points in that period to close the gap to two at the break, Louth ahead 1-5 to 0-6.
Substitute Ben Hoey made an almost immediate impact when coming on at the start of the second half for Meath scoring two points to draw the sides level.
Louth responded with an excellently taken goal from the dangerous Dean Maguire who posed a threat throughout.
There was little to choose between the teams after that and while two more Meath subs, Luke Swaine and Sean Meade were also on the mark, the visitors were unable to conjure the goal needed to save the game.
Best for the winners were Dean Maguire, Emmett Kirk, Conor Leneghan and Jack Traynor while Thomas O'Reilly, Podge McGowan and Ryan Owens did well for Meath.
After the game Michael Reid presented the Man of the Match award to Emmett Kirk and Sally Reid, wife of the late Damien, presented Louth captain, Peter Thornton with the cup.
