Battling Abbey Celtic score good victory over Lourdes

ABBEY Celtic produced a battling display to overcome Lourdes Celtic in the Meath & District League recently.
The Drogheda outfit had to overcome a numerical disadvantage after Martin Fitzpatrick was sent off midway through the first half of the match.
The centre back received his marching orders during a difficult opening first half that was their Dublin rivals seriously test them.
Despite being reduced to ten men, the Mell outfit found their feet shortly after the half hour mark and began to come into the game.
They almost took a surprise lead when both Martin Kelly and Mark Johnson both hit the Lourdes Celtic crossbar on separate occasions before the end of the half.
The second half started much cagier but the home side were starting to up the tempo. The game took another turn just past the hour mark when Abbey's Craig O'Connor was brought down for a penalty.
Martin Kelly confidently stepped up and found the net for the opening goal of the game.
To their credit, Abbey Celtic continued to look for that all important second goal and refused to sit back on their slender lead.
Their bravery was rewarded in the closing stages of the match when O'Connor pounced on a lose ball to fire home the goal that sealed the win for the Drogheda side.
