Upgrade work at Mellifont Abbey

Labour Party local election candidate for Mid-Louth, Gavan Kierans has welcomed the news that the Old Mellifont Abbey is getting an upgrade.
'The OPW has confirmed to me that work will start after Easter and take eight weeks.
'I'm delighted that the public will then be able to visit this historic and beautiful site until late September,' said Mr. Kierans.
'I am especially pleased that people with limited mobility will have greater access to the site. While I would be pleased if the OPW could fund a full-time guided service this is not possible at the moment. But improved signage and presentation will help locals and tourists alike appreciate the gem that we have in Old Mellifont.
'Tourism is not getting the push in mid Louth that it deserves. Old Mellifont Abbey is the only guided site in the entire county. However this upgrade is a direct response to the Boyne Valley Drive initiative. The OPW have said that the Old Mellifont Abbey site is a key location so improving access for all tourists is a welcome move".
