SOME of the area's best young artists feature in the 59th Texaco Awards, presently running in the Highlanes Gallery until November 9.

A lot of the 126 entries are stunning and all worthy of merit, but if you view them all with a keen eye, surely Katya Lalor's 'The Longest Day' merited the overall best image in the competition.

She did collect a Special Merit Award, but there is no doubt that the 12-year-old will be one outstanding artist in the years to come.

Her drawing is simple - images of a young girl sitting in St Mary's Parish School as the clock ticks towards 1.30 p.m., but her mind is elsewhere.

It is the only entry, out of them all, that will make you smile.

So go see it.

Shane McCann (13) also earned himself a Special Merit award for 'Feeling Great' - another stunning image from the St Oliver's CC student.

And Georgina Carpenter (18) from Our Lady's College, Greenhills, collected her Special Merit title for 'Head' - a fine piece of work.
