Probe into mystery fires

INVESTIGATIONS ARE being carried out into a number of mystery house fires which occurred in Drogheda over the past two weeks.
Following the gutting of an empty house on the Ballymakenny Road in the early hours of the Saturday morning last week, fire crews were called to a second fire across the road in Brookville over the weekend, when a second unoccupied home was also found to be ablaze.
Two units of Drogheda Fire and Rescue service contained the fire on Saturday lunchtime in an upstairs bedroom of the house, which has been empty for almost ten years.
Meanwhile at around 10am that morning, a small fire was extinguished at a house in Rathmullen Park, after a cloth soaked in fuel was set alight and pushed through the letter box.
The owner of the house was away at the time, and his sister managed to raise the alarm before the fire took hold, and little damage was done.
'We are looking into the circumstances of all these fires, but are not looking at a connection between the three of them at the moment,' said a senior garda source.
'We believe it may have been squatters in the Brookville house who started the fire, and we are investigating the incident in Rathmullen Park as being suspicious.'
